The state of Illinois has put together a list of rules for victims of domestic violence.

The goal is to minimize any future physical or emotional harm.

However, domestic battery can be charged as a Class 4 felony if the defendant has a prior domestic battery conviction, has violated an order of protection, or other aggravating factors are present.

The written notice must be accompanied by a copy of one of the following documents which verifies the tenant’s claim of domestic violence.

If the individual who committed the act of domestic violence lives in the same rental unit as the victim, all tenants, except for the perpetrator, must sign and provide the landlord with written notice of the desire to have the locks changed.
